Visual effects is one of the most interesting aspects of what we do at BRADLEY.TV. We love nothing more than being presented with a problem that requires a unique production or post-production solution. One such project was the horse racing GAME ON sting for Ladbrokes. In summary, we needed to find a way of filming a thoroughbred race horse racing at full speed (30 mph+) and head on. It didn’t take us long to work out that our green screen studio in Leeds wouldn’t be big enough so we also needed to find a way of removing the animal from the background and superimpose it back into the commercial.
We considered several options including a high speed drone, filming from our Land Rover Discovery, rigging a camera on a zip wire and even getting one of our cameraman to ride backwards on another horse. That was stupidest suggestion. In the end we realised there was only one way to do this. We used a powerful quad bike with a driver and cameraman riding back-to-back. The quad was equipped with a special stabilising gyro system that kept the camera as balanced as humanly possible as we raced across the grass surface. The footage was shot in a very high frame rate on 4K HD camera so when it came to the visual effects aspect of the work in post production we stood the very best chance possible of removing the horse accurately from its surroundings.
BRADLEY.TV were recently commissioned to produce a suite of branded animations for Ladbrokes that brought their new brand to life on-screen. We then deployed it on TV networks and in 2,400 shops across the UK.
Ladbrokes chose the following categories; Generic, football, horse racing, casino and tennis. The animations needed to be consistent in look and feel but completely different in terms of content. We advised on using a combination of real life video footage with motion graphics and special effects.
We filmed all the sequences in our green screen studio apart from the horse! That was a bit trickier and involved us shooting at speed on the back of a specialist vehicle whilst a professional race horse and jockey raced towards us at 30mph!
The work was completed in two weeks from commission to broadcast. The Football version was used as promotional bumpers on ITV for the 2012 Euro Championships in Poland whenever England played. The tennis versions were used to promote Wimbledon and the horse racing versions were used to promote all major meetings in the UK.
Simon Edwards, Head of Campaigns said “Thrilled with the results and a big thank you to everyone at BRADLEY.TV too. The project represented real value for money and we are using the work extensively across all platforms. Can’t reccommend BRADLEY.TV highly enough!”
